It's Checklist Day

Doesn't checking things off a list give you a sense of satisfaction?

Denny has gone through a mental (and verbal) checklist for decades - tie, badge, glasses....  As his work dress code changed, the words he says stayed the same but they mean different things to him depending on where he's going.  I don't see how he keeps up with what each word refers to now.  Maybe it's a memory building exercise for him.

Do you know the adult version of Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes?

Here are two versions on YouTube you may enjoy.

It's National Oatmeal Day

It may be too late to have oatmeal for breakfast but it's never too late for oatmeal cookies!  Enjoy some today.  What's your favorite way to enjoy oatmeal?  I had a hand cream that said it had oatmeal in it and it was soothing.  Speaking of soothing oatmeal, did anyone else get plunked into an oatmeal bath when they had chicken pox or measles?

I'm going to enjoy National Hermit Day today also.  Although, it's been more like National Hermit Year.

Denny and I enjoy watching cozy mysteries.  The 1st episode of Diagnosis Murder aired on October 29, 1993.  It's one of our favorite series.  I was enjoying reruns on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries but Christmas movies have taken over like a zombie invasion.  Guess I'll have to wait until the new year to see if the Community General crew and Detective Steve Sloan survived.

If none of the above are on your celebration list, how about International Internet Day?  That's something we are all celebrating right now as you read this.

It's National Potato Day

There are so many yummy ways to have potatoes!  I think I want to fancy up a baked potato by rubbing salt on the skin - okay, that's gourmet for my cooking.  What's your favorite way to have potatoes?

I saw a commercial for please and thank you that was the Oliver I want more scene.  Thinking of potatoes has the Food, Glorious Food song in my head now.

It's also Teddy Roosevelt's birthday today.  I may need to watch Night at the Museum.

Monday, October 26, 2020

It's National Pumpkin Day

Enjoy National Pumpkin Day with pumpkin pie, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin spice latte.  Celebrate orange today.

It's also "Cut Out Dissection" Month.  I mention it because my granddaughter, Leah, had to participate in a dissection at school not too long ago and she was not excited about it.  She's easily grossed out, as am I.

It's National I Care About You Day & Mother-in-Law Day

Show someone you care about them today.  It can be your Mother-in-Law.  Call her today - it's only one day a year!  Okay, really, I hope your mother-in-law is as nice as mine was.

It's Food Day & Make a Difference Day

Today is a day to be aware of food prices and think about how to make your menus healthier.

Celebrate Make a Difference Day by volunteering to help at the food bank or elsewhere.  Opportunities will increase as we enter the holiday season next month so this can be a carry-over day for the rest of the year.

It's National Croc Day

I love croc shoes.  They are so comfortable and they come in all kinds of styles now.  They're all that I wear anymore so, since I have to go into work today, I will definitely be celebrating National Croc Day.

It's Fall Car Care Month.  My van needs an oil change so I guess I'll celebrate this with Fast Lane next week.

It's also National Dental Hygiene Month.  As my dentist's emails keep reminding me, don't let your dental insurance go unused, make an appointment before the end of the year.  So, I have a dental appointment next week too.

Sounds like this day's celebrations are tailor made for me.  Hope you find something to celebrate today.  It's Friday!

It's Clean Up the Earth Day & National Color Day

October must be clean up something month because several days have been focused on that.  I guess it's "get things ready for holiday decorating" mode.  Do something today to clean up your part of the earth.

While you're cleaning up your part of the earth, notice the colors that surround you.  God has painted our world in beautiful hues; take some time to look and see.

It's Apple Day and International Day of the Nacho

Celebrate Apple Day.  Pick your own from the tree or from the store.  Apple items are always popular - apple pie, apple butter, sliced apples.  Yum.

Nachos are a favorite in my family.  I bought ingredients to celebrate International Day of the Nacho for dinner tonight.  (The chips are hidden so Aaron doesn't eat them all.  He's a chip lover for sure!)  When I make my own nachos, they're very basic - chips, cheese, and ground beef if it's available; but when I get them out, I want the refried beans, sour cream, and diced tomatoes.  Basically, I want 7 Layer Dip Nachos!

Celebrate "Back to the Future" Day with a Back to the Future marathon while you eat apples and nachos.

Tuesday, October 20, 2020

It's Office Chocolate Day

It's Office Chocolate Day but since we're not in the office together right now, I guess I'll have to eat all the chocolate myself!

Before the month is over, here are some celebrations to fit in:

Country Music Month

Financial Planning Month

National Dental Hygiene Month

Gourmet Adventures Month

It's Evaluate Your Life Day and National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day

According to checkiday, Evaluate Your Life Day was created "to encourage everyone to check and see if they're really headed where they want to be.  Once we examine where we are succeeding and where we need to improve in different aspects of our life, while also evaluating where we want to be and if we are on the path to get there, we are much more likely to achieve our goals."

Okay, honestly, that sounds exhausting to me.  How many of us have a plan like that?  Don't hold your plans too tightly because ultimately, we don't control much.  Have you seen this meme?  "So in retrospect, in 2015, not a single person got the answer right to "Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?"

Proverbs 19:21  Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.

Having said that, I think I'll continue to focus on cleaning up my virtual desktop.  I have a little more control over that, although, One Drive and I hate each other.  Come to think of it, my experience this year shows that I don't have as much control over this as I think I do either.  I've lost files that One Drive said it saved but didn't so cleaning my virtual desktop is definitely a work in progress!

How are things going with you?  I am curious about the life plan thing.  I know when my kids were at home, there were days I got halfway through the alphabet with my "plan for the day."

It's National Chocolate Cupcake Day & Alaska Day

Yes, an excuse to eat a chocolate cupcake and not feel guilty!

While you eat your cupcake, why not do a little research on Alaska?  It was admitted as a state on Oct 18, 1959.  Secretary of State Seward took a lot of heat for buying the frozen territory from Russia but it turned out ok for the U.S.

How can you incorporate Alaska into your day?  Maybe eat some Alaskan crab legs and Baked Alaska.  Watch the Disney movie Balto, which is based on a true story.  That's all I could think of; how else can we celebrate Alaska Day?

It's National Pasta Day

Here are some month celebrations to combine with National Pasta Day.

Combine it with National Pizza Month by making Crustless Pizza.  Recipes That Crock has a Crustless Pizza for the oven.  They also have a recipe for Crustless Pizza in the crockpot and in the air fryer.

Combine it with Seafood Month by adding shrimp to this Lemon Garlic Pasta recipe from Wonky Wonderful.

Make mac and cheese and add country ham to celebrate Eat Country Ham Month.

The other food choices for the month are Cookie Month and National Popcorn Popping Month but I don't prefer pasta with my cookies or popcorn.

Friday, October 16, 2020

It's National Boss's Day & World Food Day

Send a good word to your boss today to celebrate National Boss's Day.

Eat up and celebrate World Food Day too.

While you're eating, celebrate the founding of the Walt Disney Company in 1923 by watching a Disney movie.  They come in all age ranges now, from animated to Marvel heroes.

Celebrate Angela Lansbury's birthday and watch the animated Beauty and the Beast.  I think she was the voice of the teapot.  Angela Lansbury is also in Mary Poppins Returns, along with several other actors you may recognize.  If you want to watch a different Disney movie, catch Lansbury in Murder She Wrote.

It's "I Love Lucy" Day and National Cheese Curd Day

Are you an "I Love Lucy" fan?  At least go to YouTube and watch a clip from the show.  Laughter is good for the soul.

If there's a Culver's near you, pick up some cheese curds to munch while you watch Lucy.  And if you need an idea for dinner tonight, it's National Chicken Cacciatore Day.

It's also Global Handwashing Day but we won't dwell on it because that's been everyday this year!

It's National Dessert Day

What's your favorite dessert?  One thing these daily celebrations has shown me is what I really do and don't prefer.  I now am sure pie is not my favorite, unless it's lemon pie.  I also don't gravitate toward ice cream but I think I may have to get a Sundae from McDonald's this afternoon.

I try not to keep sweets in the house because I'll eat them.  That usually ends with me searching the pantry and freezer commenting on the intelligence of the person who does the shopping and doesn't buy anything sweet.  However, since quarantine, Denny has been doing more shopping and he does buy sweets so I might be able to find something in the house today.

What are your dessert choices?

It's National M&M Day and English Language Day

My friend, Chrissy, frequently tells me to "use your words!"  So, get your quota of words in today but they need to be in English.  Do a crossword puzzle or word search.  Play Scrabble or Boggle.

It's also National Train Your Brain Day & International Plain Language Day.  Sounds like today is the day to say what you mean - spell it out.  But be kind.  This is not a free-for-all.

Munch on some M&Ms while you play with letters and words.

It's also the first of 2 Prime Days on Amazon.  Remember to check out Target and Walmart also.

Monday, October 12, 2020

It's National Online Banking Day

Do you do banking online?  Don't answer that.  It's the direction things have gone, isn't it?  Today the banks want you to celebrate by using online banking.  That's the commercial.  Now for the rest of the story.

I plan to check out deals on Prime Day on Amazon.  I understand Target and Walmart are holding their own version of Prime Day.  If you are interested in Prime Days, October 13-14, check out these two folks.

It's Pastor Appreciation Day & Kimberly Day & National Sausage Pizza Day

Let your pastors know how much you appreciate them today, this month, always.  If they are called-by-God, true pastors, their heart is always for you and they take their responsibilities very seriously.  Support them, financially and emotionally, the best you can.  Love you, Pastor Glen Keefer (Calvary Faith Center, Wendell, NC)!  I appreciate all the pastors who have helped me learn and grow throughout my life.

If you know a Kimberly, wish her a happy name day today.  Happy Kimberly Day, Kim Walaski!

My Kim is a vegan so I will have to eat sausage pizza for her.  I might need to add some other toppings too.  We had pizza for the after-ceremony celebration meal yesterday and we are probably eating leftover pizza for breakfast this morning.

Saturday, October 10, 2020

It's National Angel Food Cake Day & National Love Your Hair Day

It's also Katherine's & Forrest's wedding day.  Katherine will have her hair loved by long-time friend, Apryl, owner of Hair Undone in Wake Forest, NC, who is making a special trip to Greenville just to help Katherine get ready for the wedding.

We won't be celebrating with angel food cake, although that would have been a good choice too; the bride prefers s'mores over the fire pit at the hotel.

Wishing many blessings to the newlyweds.

Friday, October 9, 2020

It's National Sneakers Day & Submarine-Hoagie-Hero-Grinder Day

Sub Day!  Known by many names but the same great sandwich.

This day used to be known as casual Friday when many of us actually wore work clothes and went out to work.  Wear sneakers with your jeans today, if you're wearing pants nowadays.

Happy Friday

It's World Sight Day

I am grateful for my sight.  Take care of your eyes.

Matthew 11:5  The blink receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.

Today is Matt Damon's birthday.  My favorite Matt Damon movie is We Bought a Zoo.

It's also Chevy Chase's birthday.  It's been awhile since I've seen one of his movies so I'm not going to recommend a specific one but he made two movies with Goldie Hawn and I really like her.

That's all I've got for today.

It's International Walk to School Day & National Flower Day

I will not be participating in International Walk to School Day; the school I work at is too far from home.  However, here's a flower for you for National Flower Day.

Tuesday, October 6, 2020

It's National Noodle Day

Even though noodles are made out of the same ingredients, some noodles taste better in some dishes than others.  That makes no sense to me but it's true.  My favorite noodle meal is macaroni and cheese with browned ground beef mixed in and the noodles have to be elbow macaroni.  What would spaghetti be without spaghetti noodles?  Hamburger Stroganoff and Tuna Noodles Romanoff must be made with egg noodles.  And what would lasagna be without lasagna noodles?  See what I mean?  I think my favorite noodles are egg noodles.  Thailand 1 Dollar Meals has a Noodles Romanoff recipe that's just like mine with two exceptions.  I put 2 cans of drained tuna in mine and I don't put Worcestershire sauce in it.

What's your favorite type of noodle and what's your favorite noodle dish?

It's Blue Shirt Day & Do Something Nice Day

Well, I got dressed before I read this so I will either pretend my purple shirt is blue or pretend that tomorrow is Blue Shirt Day.  How about you?

Do Something Nice today.  You're not limited to one something.  I think the something nice is supposed to be for someone else, not yourself; although, it doesn't specify that.

It's also Global James Bond Day.  Who's your favorite James Bond?  That's not my choice of movie and I may not have even seen a Bond movie but I like Pierce Brosnan.  At least, I liked him in Remington Steele.

Sunday, October 4, 2020

It's National Golf Day & Cinnamon Roll Day & National Taco Day

The first US Open for Golf was played this date in 1895.  Slip in some golf today if you can.  Celebrate National Golf Day with one of these.

Play 18- or 9- holes

Enjoy the driving range

Play some Putt-Putt

Play Golf, the card game

Enjoy an excuse for sweets for breakfast when you celebrate Cinnamon Roll Day.

After a game of golf, enjoy an easy lunch or dinner and celebrate National Taco Day.

Hope you have a nice Sunday.

Saturday, October 3, 2020

It's National Family TV Show Day & International Frugal Fun Day

I'm not sure how frugal watching TV is since there's a cost and it can be costly but I do hope you get to celebrate National Family TV Show Day.  What are your favorites?  I like The Andy Griffith Show, Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World, and Full and Fuller House.

Celebrate International Frugal Fun Day.  Play a game or do a puzzle that you already own.  Observe nature for some truly frugal fun and celebrate Look at the Leaves Day and National Butterfly and Hummingbird Day.

Friday, October 2, 2020

It's World Smile Day and National Denim Day

Celebrate World Smile Day by putting a smile on your face.  Of course, no one will be able to see it if you're wearing a mask so share smiles with emojis in text messaging, emails, and social media posts too.

I can wear denim jeans today for casual Friday to celebrate National Denim Day and that makes me smile.

Smile and do a Snoopy happy dance to celebrate the first Peanuts comic strip being published this day in 1950.

I hope you smile while you watch this clip from You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx.  Today is Groucho's birthday; he was born in 1890.  "Say the secret word and win $100."  These clips are only about 7 minutes long each and had me laughing out loud.  I mean LOL.

Thursday, October 1, 2020

Happy National Black Dog Day & International Coffee Day

It's National Black Dog Day.  Below is a picture of Dan's dog, Natasha.  She even smiled for the camera.  I know my pastor, Glen Keefer has a black dog.  Who else has one or two?  Post a picture.

Celebrate International Coffee Day with a different type of coffee than you normally drink.  Use a different creamer or coffee flavor.  Drink it cold instead of hot.  I'm going to add some hot chocolate mix to my coffee.  Mix it up a little today.

Today is Julie Andrews' birthday.  Combine it with International Music Day and choose a musical that Julie Andrews was in, like The Sound of Music or Mary Poppins.
